Saturday 20th November 2010, 7.30pm Bach: Christmas Oratorio |
Bach's ‘Christmas Oratorio’ consists of six cantatas originally intended to be performed over six days during the festive season. We will sing four of them this evening. The six sections trace the Christmas story from Mary's arrival in Bethlehem to the departure of the Magi. Just listen to its glorious opening chorus and be whirled into the final 34 shopping days to Christmas!

Saturday 26th March 2011, 7.30pm Elgar: The Kingdom |
‘The Kingdom’ is the second part of a never completed trilogy; many (including Sir Adrian Boult) consider it the finest part. It tells of the early Church following the Resurrection: the choice of Matthias to replace Judas (a man Elgar thought misunderstood) and the subsequent establishment of the foundations of Christianity. There is also one of Elgar's loveliest melodies, ‘The Sun Goeth Down’, while the Prelude sounds perilously like a movie theme!

Saturday 2nd July 2011, 7.30pm Rossini: Petite Messe Solennelle |
The harmonium was a highly-regarded instrument in the second half of the nineteenth century, and Franck and his pupil Vierne took it seriously enough to compose extensively for it. So did Rossini who employed it in his ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’ which, despite its title, is neither "petite" nor particularly solemn although it was first performed at a pontifical high mass: decidedly a sin of Rossini's old age in fact!
